The Zambonis
Play-Off Fever!
Ah, those wacky Dot Dot Dash/Philistines Jr. folks -- they never get tired of showing the world how to not take indie-rock seriously. This time they're kinda ripping off NoMeansNo alter-egos The Hanson Brothers with their own hockey-fixated band of drunk, happy-go-lucky idiots. Yup, this whole damn thing's a joke -- how can it not be, when these guys are singing about '95-'96 Stanley Cup champions the Colorado Avalanche ("Avalanche!") and comparing true love to a zamboni ("Great Zamboni of Devotion")? They even pull off what could be a decent little indie-pop song with "C.C.M. P.S.A. (The Helmet Song)"...except that it's a little ditty trying to convince player Craig McTavish to wear his helmet, and the lyrics are way goofy.
They win out with the last track, as well, a redone version of the classic "The Hockey Song" that starts out slow & countrified and finishes up in an explosive hardcore punk blast. As jokes go, this is a pretty good one... Now, the question is this: how much are you willing to pay for a joke? (JH)
