It’s looking like one hell of a Saturday (January 28th, that is), y’all. Not only is there the “biggie” of the bunch, the Main Street Block Party, but there’s also a ton of other stuff going on besides…

Holy wow, y’all. Tomorrow (Sat., January 28th) marks the 2nd-ever installment of the Main Street Block Party, a heavyweight pile of bands and musicians all spread out across a bunch of Midtown venues, including…

As we head into the holiday madness this weekend — believe it or not, I didn’t realize ’til this AM that I actually got Monday off from the Day Job — I wanted to mention some of the cooler of the many, many cool things going on…

Midway through the weekend, y’all, and it’s still going strong. Plenty happening tonight (Sat., February 26th), too — here’s what I think sounds cool, anyway…

I’ve been way, way behind on the local music news-type stuff, unfortunately. I have a stupid tendency to just kind of “collect” news I get for long periods of time, waiting ’til there’s enough (in my OCD brain, that is) to post about…

Well, it’s Saturday (January 15th, to be exact), and I’m busily doing the family stuff — playing with the kids, getting up on the roof to dig leaves out of the gutters, the usual — but I didn’t want to let all the excellent stuff going on tonight slip past…

There’s something very, very cool about actually getting to hear a band growing up, in the process of finding and evolving and tweaking their particular sound. And believe it or not, it’s a pretty rare thing, at least in the modern, rarefield realm of indie labels…

Day 2 of a busy-as-hell weekend… Today (Saturday, December 18th) is a pretty massive one, particularly on the local front — and believe me when I say that that’s nothing to sneeze at. Anybody who thinks nothing worth listening to…

The “in-house” label of local retro-ified rockers {Paris Falls}, and the imprint they’ve used to put out their whole catalogue so far (which is pretty deep); they’re pretty heavily DIY, and the stuff they release tend to sound nicely fuzzy and warm…

Hey, all — yep, I’m back in town after my little jaunt abroad (over to London to visit some of the extended fam), and I’m still working on getting caught up with everything, especially the massive number of new shows that’ve popped up on the radar in my absence…

While I’m pretty sure that’s not what it’s talking about, the A-side of the new 7-inch single from retro-rockers Paris Falls, “Big Surprise,” actually does find itself a little ways off from what I’ve come to think of as the band’s main musical neighborhood…

Holy crap, it is some weekend coming up, folks — I hardly know where to start. Okay, that’s not true, not really, because where I pretty much have to start is with my top two shows of this evening (Friday, February 12th), both of which will be utterly badass. First off, though, some sad news […]

A bit over the line, I know — got some new stuff up this AM, just in time for tonight… As I raved about earlier on, both Paris Falls and The Small Sounds are playing here in town tonight, and so we’ve got reviews up of both the brand-new Paris Falls disc, Volume III (which […]

I think Volume III works best when viewed as part of a bigger whole, right alongside Paris Falls’ previous efforts, Vol. 1 and Vol. II. Going by the band’s choice of titles for the three albums so far, it sure seems like they intended there to be some kind of progression…

phew…another late night, another update. Big thanks to all the hard-working writer folk, by the by, for getting this stuff in — this little e-zine would die a sad and lonely death with only yours truly doing the writing for it, I swear. Everybody, your efforts are very much appreciated. I owe you all beers. […]

In general, I’ve tried to make a habit of keeping a bit of critical distance from bands that make their living by digging up the musical past. Sure, I enjoy the hell out of bands like The Redwalls or The Darkness in part because of the fact that they mine styles that evoke a certain era…
