Hey, all — apologies for the quiet these past couple of months; yours truly got swallowed up by work and home stuff and had to set SCR to the side somewhat, unfortunately. Sometimes that’s just how it goes, y’know? I’m going to try to post more frequently in the coming days, however (although they might […]

Hey, y’all — been quiet lately, I know, and I’m sorry about that. I’ve been somewhat preoccupied with, um, other things lately…[mumble]thefateofthecountryandtexasturningblueandbetoandlizzieandstufflikethat[mumble]… So I’ve kinda fallen behind yet again; profuse apologies, and I swear, I am trying to get better. Unfortunately, I’ll be offline this weekend…

I’ve been sadly remiss in posting about it before now, which sucks, but I wanted to at least give a big-ass thumbs-up to the excellent-sounding River Revival Music Festival, which starts today, Thursday, September 27th, and runs through this Sunday, September 30th…

Hello, SCR friends! It took a little while to get beyond the allergies, but now I’m ready to get started with my field report on Houston’s newest “big field fest,” In Bloom Music Festival. I’ll begin with Day One and then cover Day Two soon, along with some random thoughts and hopes for the future…

And here we are, y’all — back again for the third (and final) round of randomly-ordered previews/rundowns for Madness on Main Festival 2018, coming this Saturday, June 9th, over at White Oak Music Hall and The Raven Tower…

So, here we find ourselves again, for the second round of our annual rundowns of as many randomly-selected musicians & bands playing at Madness on Main as we can jam into our earholes before the big day (i.e., this Saturday, June 9th) up at White Oak Music Hall and The Raven Tower…

Ahhh, yeah. These days it seems like music festivals spring up in this city like mushrooms after a few days’ rain — that is, all over my lawn, goddammit, and never when/where I want them. Um, sort of; sorry, that particular metaphor got away from a me a bit… But the reality is that there seems to be an ever-increasing number of festivals/mini-festivals/etc. going on here throughout the year. And in general, I’m good with that, even if I can’t make it to every…

A bit late, I know, but there’re a bunch of outdoor festival-type things that were supposed to be happening this weekend, Sat. & Sun., April 21st & 22nd, that haven’t quite worked out like the organizers had originally planned. First off — and by far the largest of these — is the Great Texas BBQ Festival, a two-day festival that was meant to take place at Sam Houston Park this weekend…

Well, here we are, friends. The inaugural In Bloom Music Festival unfurls tomorrow, Saturday, March 24th, at the ever-picturesque Eleanor Tinsley Park. Do me a favor, by the way, y’all: don’t just chuck your garbage anywhere, okay? Every festival I’ve been to over there has had plenty of trash bins spread throughout the grounds, and sometimes separate bins for recycling…

Argh. Sorry for the delay, folks — yesterday my computer decided this was a good time to implode, and I’ve been scrambling to get it back up and running since. We’re finally once again functional, so now we can get going on Part 3 of Space City Rock‘s randomly-selected rundowns…

And here we are, back again, with Round Two of our inaugural bunch of previews/rundowns/whatevers for the musicians & bands playing at In Bloom Fest this coming weekend (Sat., March 24th, & Sun., March 25th). Before we get into it, though, I wanted to point to one thing that I saw…

Hey, all — heading full-speed towards the first-ever In Bloom Music Fest, this coming Saturday & Sunday, March 24th & 25th over at Eleanor Tinsley Park, which also happens to be one of my absolute favorite places in this whole damn city…

I know this is a bit on the late-notice side, but…well, what the hell. If you think your lip-sync game is strong (and I’m thinking here of Paul Rapp on The Jimmy Fallon Show), and you want the chance to jump up on stage and perform at the fast-approaching In Bloom Music Festival, hey, you’re in luck…

Alright, so by now you’d have to be pretty damn out-of-touch to not know that the much-loved/much-derided summertime Houston music festival known variously as FPSF, Free Press Summer Fest, or just Summerfest is no more. In its place (kind of) is In Bloom. The revamped/rebranded festival is now not in the summer (hence the “kind of”) but will instead be happening in the springtime, on Saturday & Sunday, March 24th & 25th, at the ever-awesome Eleanor Tinsley Park just west of Downtown…

Yep, we’re coming down to the wire, friends — today, Friday, December 15th, is the start of this weekend’s Day for Night festival over at Post HTX, starting with this evening’s Friday Summit and continuing on into two full days of music & art…

Here at SCR, we’re fortunate to have worked with some truly talented photographers over the years, and at the top of that list are Jason Smith and Marshall Forse Walker, both of whom are wonderful guys and both of whom have shot a whole lot of pictures for us…

Annnnnd here we are again, y’all. It’s time for Round Three of our preview/rundown things for this year’s Day for Night, which is this coming Friday-Sunday, December 15th-17th at what used to be the old Downtown Post Office but is now the art/performance space Post HTX. The weekend promises to be packed full of all types of music — trending towards the odd, quirky, or experimental, mind you…

Yes, yes, yes. Day for Night 2017 is right around the corner, just one solitary week away — it kicks off with a Summit session of talks & whatnot this Friday, December 15th, and then the music, art, and all the rest happens on Saturday, December 16th, and Sunday, December 17th, the whole deal unfolding over at Post HTX downtown…

Argh. Been fighting a nasty cold, y’all, and desperately hoping I kick it before the big day, so I’ve been slipping a bit on talking about the rapidly-approaching Day for Night festival, which happens just over a week from now, Dec. 15-17, at Post HTX…

Well…wow. I’ve been behind on Houston-related music news lately, it’s true, but out of all of it, this definitely takes the cake. We got word this morning that our city’s iconic nine-year-old music festival, alternately known as Free Press Summer Festival, FPSF, or Summerfest, is changing in a fairly big way…

Now that the floodwaters have receded (mostly), and things have finally started to cool down (temporarily), we figured it was way past time to look backwards to happier days (again, mostly), namely to this past summer’s FPSF, back when we didn’t know who in the hell “Harvey” was, we weren’t all experts at ripping out drywall…

It’s about goddamn time we got some good news, y’all. Half this city’s still ripping out its floors and walls and replacing every thing they own, schools and libraries are closed or relocated or damaged beyond repair, businesses are shut down until further notices, big, fun music festivals and conventions are rescheduling or just plain canceling, and every time it rains, we all cringe like a dog that’s been kicked…

Well, damn. I’d wondered, honestly, if it might happen — after all, we’ve seen a lot of cancellations of shows of various sizes, but so far the raft of upcoming festivals seemed to be somewhat immune…

It began with a screwup. On my part, mind you, nobody else’s. Before I get to that, though, there’re some things that need to be said about FPSF, aka The Festival Formerly Known As Free Press Summer Festival…

Here we are, again, back with another randomly-chosen look at the bands and musicians who’ll be up at Eleanor Tinsley Park (hopefully) on the edge of Downtown this weekend — Saturday, June 3rd, and Sunday, June 4th — for the musical festival-type thing known as FPSF…

Alright, people — we’re doing this, dammit. If this feels like it’s getting off to a late start, well, it kind of is, partly because we here at SCR have been having to shift focus to and from all the other festivals going on around here lately, and that’s pushed this back a bit…
