Sedaris
(Strangers With Candy, Wigfield)
At the Somerville Theatre, Somerville, Massachusetts
June 14, 2003
Rather than conduct a standard book tour, the authors of Wigfield put together a series of
staged readings and sold tickets. This was brilliant for two reasons:
1) the performance that resulted was hilarious, with each of them
reading the lines of each of the book's characters underneath a
pictures of what those characters looked like, which created a neatly
amusing cognitive dissonance when watching a sharply dressed Sedaris
reading the lines of the deranged and infantile Mayor Charles Halstead
as the latter's horrifying picture was projected above her head; and 2)
the thing where they actually make money regardless of whether anybody
buys the book. Me, I bought two. Happy birthday, Jeremy!
