Critic's pick: Velvet

When Matthew Sweet played Live with Regis and
Kathy Lee to promote Blue Sky On Mars seven years
ago, Mrs. Gifford found a new way to
creep us all out by stating of Sweet’s drummer, “Who’s that? I want one
of
those.” “Everybody should have a Ric Menck,” was Sweet’s response, and
he
wasn’t kidding. Ten years after their classic Teenage
Symphonies To God, Menck and his Velvet Crush cohort Paul
Chastain continue to serve as power-pop standard-bearers, promoting
their own
new Stereo Blues while obeying
Sweet’s every command later the same night. – Marc Hirsh
