Okay, so it explicitly equated changing your clothes with changing your
life. Dubious self-improvement tips aside, “So Yesterday” was one of last
year’s best pop singles, even if some folks just couldn’t get beyond Duff’s
Lizzie McGuire-dom to actually give it an honest spin. Their loss:
the Matrix haven’t written or produced a better record than this kicky kiss-off,
and there are points when Duff’s vocal even manages to sneak through the
gloss to tug at the heartstrings a little. If she’s nothing more than the
final piece in their puzzle, there’s still something to be said for the fact
that she fits just fine. Ignore her at your peril, because like it or not,
she’s not going away. At least, not today. – Marc Hirsh
