Action Town Records
Sadly, my introduction to Action Town was with the last blaze-of-glory release by one of my favorite H-town bands ever, {Teenage Kicks}; their Uptight was/is a pretty great way to go out…

Dunno much about this label, except that they primarily put out cassettes(!), mostly by Austinites Mammoth Grinder. There’re a couple of vinyl releases in there, too…
Metal, metal, metal. I’ve never heard any of these bands, I must admit, but they’ve all got names like Dismemberment and Limb Splitter and put out albums called Bleeding His Sacred Kingship…
One of the best damn punk labels in town, I’d love Cutthroat, honestly, if all they did was put out records by local garage-punk/rawk heroes {Born Liars}. Happily, that’s not all they do…
A relatively-new label in town, the Psych Wolf crew (er, person?) puts out mostly loud, fast, messy punk, thrash, and hardcore, all old-school and all noisy as hell…
The “in-house” label of local retro-ified rockers {Paris Falls}, and the imprint they’ve used to put out their whole catalogue so far (which is pretty deep); they’re pretty heavily DIY, and the stuff they release tend to sound nicely fuzzy and warm…
A new record label in town, and definitely a promising one; it’s a joint venture between Dan Workman of H-town’s legendary SugarHill Studios and Ross Wells of Zenfilm…
Excellent local indie-rock/pop label, previously home to The Western Civilization and currently putting out records by Buxton, Gretchen Schmaltz, Framework, & Hollywood Black…

Well, I know a bit more about these guys now; they’re a re-release label, whose mission is to repress rare/unreleased punk rock in Texas (primarily from the Houston area)…
This label’s pretty big, in the scheme of local indies… Heart’s been around since 1989, and has apparently made somewhat of a name for itself in the jazz music industry (infer from that that yes, they’re a jazz label)…

Compadre’s one of the bigger-profile labels in town these days, with well-known country/roots music folks like Billy Joe Shaver, Hayes Carll, and Townes Van Zandt…
Under the name Music For Apartments Records, the collective offers music from a wide range of genres. A lot of the niche mentality of the past has been dissolved by the immense amount of culture that diffuses daily accross the internets…
Yep, the venerable H-town rap label, home to gangsta masters Geto Boys, plus Devin The Dude, Do or Die, Yukmouth, Scarface, Z-Ro, Tela, UTP, Hi-C, and Dirty…
Home of The Kidnap Soundtrack, Leaf, The Mechanical Boy, and Auralift…
Don’t know a whole lot about this label, except that it was started by once-big-time local rapper Carlos Coy, aka South Park Mexican, and is turning rapidly into one of the biggest hip-hop labels in town…
A cool new local label, Binary Hate’s actually not focused strictly on local stuff, which is sorta unusual for around here…
This record label’s run by Nick Cooper (formerly of Sprawl, now of the Free Radicals), and most of the stuff they seem to have available — on CD-R if it’s out-of-print, which is nice — is from the old Sprawl days…
This is basically Sad Pygmy’s label, but they put out stuff by other folks, too, like Rotten Piece, Turmoil In The Toybox, Richard Ramirez, and Rotting Fish. Within the last few years they’ve released a 7-inch or two of Sad Pygmy’s…
Justice is Houston’s biggest label, stuck somewhere between being major-label scum and helping local artists make it big. I’m told that their head guy, Randall Jamail(?), has somewhat of a bad reputation, so be warned…
Since the seeming demise of folks like Sound Virus and Lazy Squid, Fleece is actually one of the few record label bastions of experimental music left in this town (at least, as far as I can tell, and I’m no expert)…
Man, these labels are popping up left’n right – I can barely keep up! sigh… At any rate, this label was apparently started by Sperlings’ guitarist/singer Carl Sandin…
