Yr. Early Weekend: Buxton + Wild Moccasins + JEFF the Brotherhood + Break Science + The Museum of Carnal Possibilities + More

Yep, I do know what day it is, don’t worry (it’s Thursday, October 2nd, derr). It’s just that since I completely blew last weekend’s writeups, I figured I’d attempt to get a jump on this weekend’s. Hence, a quick glimpse of what’s happening tonight. Here we go:

Sounds Like Houston! Concert Series, featuring Wild Moccasins & Buxton @ Discovery Green (6:30-10PM; free!)
First up — and the earliest of the bunch, too, chronologically speaking — is this evening’s utterly badass installment of the Sounds Like Houston! series of shows up at Discovery Green, which includes both {The Wild Moccasins} and {Buxton}, who will form some kind of Voltron-like colossus of musical majesty and awesomeness. Well, maybe. Even if they don’t, though, this promises to be great; it’s been a few years now since these two bands have played together, despite being good pals, and they’re truly a pair of the leading lights in this here city’s music scene, with both getting better and better with every damn release and tour.

Beyond that, it’s free, it’s pretty nice outside, and it’s early enough that those of us (er, me) with children don’t have to skip it. Get on up to Downtown, y’all, and show up early, because the bands are determining who goes first with a coin toss. At this point, I’ve got no clue who it’ll be.

JEFF the Brotherhood @ Warehouse Live (Studio)
Coming in at a close, close second is the ever-cool JEFF the Brotherhood, who’ll be imploding Warehouse Live tonight by virtue of their sheer, flat-out rockingness. No, seriously; these guys play unpretentious, nod-your-head-and-grin indie-rock that’ll make you dream once again of the days when you were a kid and didn’t feel so goddamn lame (okay, maybe that’s just me, but you get the idea). They’re like Weezer with the nerdy influences and egos stripped away and replaced with a sincere desire to do nothing but just chill with your friends and get wasted, or like Wolf Colonel minus the sarcasm and GBV tendencies, or like Moonlight Towers with less classic rock and more of either of those two previous bands.

Oh, and they’ve got a brand-new EP coming out, Dig The Classics, where they take songs by My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fanclub, Beck, The Wipers, Colleen Green, and The Pixies and make them their own. No lie.

Break Science/Manic Focus/Space Jesus/Project Aspect @ Fitzgerald’s
Up at Fitzgerald’s tonight is where any EDM heads should probably be (by my own estimation, anyway), to catch the wall-rumbling glory of Break Science. I’ve been listening quite a bit to latest album Seven Bridges, and I’ve got to say that I’m mightily, mightily impressed. They’re less like a lot of their more up-and-coming counterparts and more of a throwback to old-school EDM, particularly The Crystal Method — there are points on Seven Bridges where I would’ve sworn up and down I was listening to a brand-new Method album, seriously, and I don’t mean that as a bad thing.

It helps, of course, that I’m a sucker for live drums and synths — as opposed to the much-parodied dude with his finger poised over a button. Take a listen:

Last on the list is…well, hell, I’m not entirely sure what this is, to be honest with you. I think that this is a live show to commemorate the release of a new comp of experimental/noise stuff, The Museum of Carnal Possibilities, but I’m positive that the show itself includes some talented, cool people, including experimental guitarist {Sandy Ewen} and Spike the Drummer‘s {Astrogenic Hallucinauting} project. If you’re at all into things strange, different, noisy, and/or experimental (and, um, free, I should note), get your ass over to Sound Exchange…
