Roy Zimmerman’s Political Satire — Three Nights in Houston
Roy Zimmerman is on the cutting edge of political satire in America. Like Stephen Colbert’s facetious TV persona, Zimmerman works with irony at the highest levels, playing with words and ideas to build humorous tales about the world’s most serious topics.
Zimmerman doesn’t use a character like Colbert, though. Instead, he confidently attacks his right-wing targets with a band, through song, bringing to mind James McMurtry’s most virulent attacks on Wal-Mart, and the exact same political leaders which he calls out by name.
On Friday, March 28th, Wally James will interview Roy on KPFT 90.1 FM‘s Progressive Forum show at 7:00 PM. Then on Saturday, March 29th, Larry Winters will host Roy on his Spare Change show on KPFT at 1:00 PM.
He and his guitar play three shows in Houston this month. The first is Friday, at Molly Ivins’ Texas Observer‘s Final Friday event — RSVP at “Janhtx” at “gmail dot com”.
On Saturday, Roy plays the Live Oak Friends Meeting House, at a show sponsored by the Houston Peace and Justice Center at 1318 W 26th Street. $15 advance tickets, $20 at the door, or pay what you can. The potluck starts at 6PM; the show starts at 7PM.
On Sunday, March 30th, at 7:00PM at The Boom Boom Room (2518 Yale Street) Roy’s playing once more, at a membership drive for the Greater Heights Democrats and the Spring Branch Democrats.
And he’d be playing the Improv, too, if regular stand-up comedians didn’t have such hang-ups about playing alongside comedians with guitars. That’s how funny Roy Zimmerman’s work is — it’s hysterically funny stuff, and as smart as any Bob Dylan album or any of Bill Hicks’ bits.
I can’t wait to hear Roy’s song about the Virginia State Rep. who was fined for using the word “vagina’ during that state’s vaginal probe legislation process.
Roy is the quickest to deliver relevant satire– exposing hypocrisy, greed, ignorance and injustice whenever needed. This weekend in Houstn, may all come who have a sense of humor!
