Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Rudz 35th Anniversary + Folk Family Revival + Galactic Cowboys + Chicha Summit + The Wiggles + More
Man. It’s going to be a busy, busy weekend, y’all. There’s a ton of stuff going on, and I’m not just talking about the Yes Indeed! Fest tomorrow. There’s plenty tonight, too, Friday, September 13th (yeah, I know), and a lot of it looks really damn good. Here we go:
Rudyard’s 35th Anniversary, featuring Donkey Punch, Linus Pauling Quartet, The Dollyrockers, Bowel, & Born Again Virgins @ Rudyard’s
Okay, so I feel a little bad about this weekend; I’m stuck at the house tonight & Sunday, and I’ve sworn a blood oath to hit the aforementioned music festival in the warehouses on Saturday, which means I’m going to completely and totally miss the badass-sounding 35th Anniversary blowout up at Rudyard’s. Damn, damn, damn. Once, pretty long ago now, I spent an inordinate amount of time hanging out in that particular bar, even though I rarely drink (and it’s almost never beer) — the place has a special place in my heart.
To make matters worse, they’ve got a great lineup playing for the three-day festivities, with a ton of bands I love and some ({Born Again Virgins}, for one) that I keep meaning to see. Tonight’s bill features stoner-rock icons the {Linus Pauling Quartet}, who I swear to God amaze me more and more with every freaking thing they do, whether it’s an odds-and-sods collection that blows away most “real” albums I’ve heard in recent years or a heavy-as-hell slab of fantasy-fueled stoner-metal sludge, or an actual D&D module wrapped around a greatest hits collection, or — most recently — a sharp right turn into full-on, hazy dream-/drone-pop. Whatever they decide to do, it turns out golden. (And sweaty, and smelling suspiciously like beer and pot. But still, golden.)
Uncle Lucius/Folk Family Revival @ Warehouse Live (Studio)
Ah, the {Folk Family Revival} boys, Magnolia’s conquering sons… I dearly, desperately loved the band’s 2011 masterpiece, Unfolding, the title track of which still makes my heart do weird things within my chest when I hear Mason Lankford‘s gruff voice rumble and roar over that triumphantly backwoodsy, almost gospel-like sound. Unfortunately, since the release of the album, the band’s been laying somewhat low; I’d hoped they might follow up quickly with something new, but they’ve been surprisingly quiet on that front, choosing instead to just tour relentlessly here and elsewhere.
Who knows, though — they’ve got a bunch of stuff up on their FB page right now about street teams and whatnot, so maybe that means they’re gearing up for something new. Maybe? I’ll be keeping an eye out…
Galactic Cowboys/Madson/Recovery Room/Stone Pusher/Dirtymind @ Acadia Bar & Grill (sold out!)
sigh. I know this is sold out, and it has been for a while now, but that only made me want to mention it more, despite the fact that, no, if you don’t already have tickets, you won’t be able to go. Back in the ’90s, the {Galactic Cowboys} were Houston music’s Great Shining Hope for the Future, getting airplay on MTV at a time when nobody from here but ZZ Top and maybe King’s X were likely to. I’m happy as hell to see them back together again, and selling out a kinda-sorta out-of-the-way place like the Acadia Bar & Grill. Fingers crossed that it won’t be their last reunion show.
Chicha Summit!, featuring Chicha Libre, Money Chicha, Chicha Dust, & Little Joe Washington @ The Continental Club
No, I had really no idea what “Chicha” was before seeing it on the schedule over at The Continental Club, but after reading the writeup about the show over at Sig’s Lagoon, it sounds damn intriguing. Andean songs, played on surf-y guitars with wah-wah pedals, farfisas, and Moogs? Hell, yes, please.
Plus, {Little Joe Washington} may be doing his quasi-weekly Happy Hour set before the Chicha Summit gets rolling, and considering the news from the {Houston Press} recently about his failing health, you’d be wise to go early and hopefully/maybe get to see the man and pay your respects while you still can. Little Joe ain’t in the best of shape, sadly.
The Wiggles @ Bayou Music Center
What can I say? I have kids, and yes, they love those crazy Aussies, The Wiggles — unfortunately, there’s only one original member remaining, Anthony Field, but dangit, “Big Red Car” is still a freakishly catchy song.
