Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Steve’s Magical Mix Tape + American Fangs (Rev’d!) + Valens + Del Tha Funky Homosapien + The Invincible Czars + More
It’s that time, y’all — weekend’s here, starting with tonight, Friday, June 21st, and there’s plenty going on; I’m at the casa for the evening, sadly, watching Wreck-It Ralph with Munchkin #2, but there’s a lot to do for the rest of y’all. Here we go:
Steve’s 90?s Live Mix Tape B-Day Show, featuring Steve’s Magical Mix Tape, Brand New Hearts, This Year’s Tiger, & Tigerparty, covering various ’90s indie-rock/emo bands @ Fitzgerald’s
Yep, I posted about this one yesterday, but it’s well worth mentioning again, ’cause it promises to be seriously awesome. Three of the city’s coolest emo/punk bands, especially ’90s-bred supergroup {Brand New Hearts} and rootsy punks This Year’s Tiger, plus an all-star ’90s tribute/cover band fronted by Steve Duarte, Steve’s Magical Mix Tape. Flashback to your (er, my) youth, alright?
American Fangs/SixL6/Rainchild/The AD Allstars @ The 19th Hole (The Woodlands)
Pretty far outside the Loop, I know, but I swear, {American Fangs} are (is?) one of the best damn no-subgenre rock bands going in H-town — they and {the last place you look} are pretty much the two Rock Bands Most Likely to Make It Big around here, and with the release of their new full-length, American Fangs, they’ve cemented their position. Check out the review here…
Change In The Game After Party, featuring Phene, YaNi, & Yamin @ Walter’s
Already talked about this one — if you wanted to see the actual movie, Change In The Game, you’re out of luck, but hey, you can still hit up the after party over at Walter’s, which features three of Atlanta’s hottest indie hip-hop artists.
Whales (final show!)/Weakness/Aokigahara/Valens/Max. @ 11759 Creek View Ln. (Conroe)
I’m sad to hear this is {Whales} is calling it quits after this show, because what I’ve heard of ’em so far has been really damn cool, but at least they’re going out with a bang. And hey, they’re bringing excellent quasi-emo indie-rockers {Valens} along for the shindig. Get on out to Conroe, eh?
Del Tha Funky Homosapien/Bukue One/The Riddlore?/Illuminati Congo/DJ Goldfinga/BBC @ Club Riddims (8220 W. Bellfort)
Holy crap — seriously? Hip-hop legend Del Tha Funky Homosapien is popping up at Club Riddims, right down the road from my own Southwest side ‘hood? Hot damn, y’all… Westbury represent!
Come See My Dead Person/The Invincible Czars @ Big Star Bar (1005 W. 19th)
Lastly, it’s a nice twofer, with Galveston-area kooks {Come See My Dead Person}, who are fun and strange at the same time, and Austinites The Invincible Czars, who do some cool polka-meets-classical music mashups. Think the “1812 Overture” but done like a crazy Eastern European gypsy rock band, and you’ll be close. Together they’re bound to make a great team.
