Said the Whale, Little Mountain
Said the Whale is a band like far too many others I have heard, yet I am not all that turned off by them. They have this sort of rock-pop storytelling quality to their music that borders The Beatles, David Bowie, and Queen on one side, yet on the other side is closer to that of Billy Joel and Elton John. I particularly think that they sound the most like Elton John.
They just have this quality that makes it too hard to hate these songs. I don’t know what makes them stand out, exactly; maybe it is the Elton John factor. Maybe it’s because the first song is called “We Are 1980” and being that is my birth year and the birth of this album as well, it sort of works out. Plus, how many bands sing about their grandpas?
What’s kind of funny is that there is an entire language that whales speak amongst themselves, and I’m not really sure how to describe it but it sounds nothing like this music. The band name “Said the Whale” always makes me think of the Christopher Moore book Fluke, which is my favorite of all of his writings, so I guess that makes me favor this band as well.
