Tonight: High on Fire + MonstrO + Venomous Maximus, Up at Fitz!
Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrararrrgggghhhhh. Fuck, fuck, fuck. How in the hell did I let this show sneak up on me, dammit? I saw it, I listed it, and I said, “hey, I really need to go to that!” And then, here I am, at almost 7PM on Thursday, March 15th, and I’ve got a crap-ton of stuff I have to do. I am stuck, stuck, stuck, and it pisses me off. Grrr.
But hey, you don’t have to be me. Get your ass on up to Fitzgerald’s tonight to witness the horns-throwing metal in all its glory. I’m hot-and-cold on headliners High on Fire, I’m afraid — when I saw Priestess open for them a few years ago, I thought the Canucks were way better — but they’re still badass in general, and well worth checking out.
Openers MonstrO, on the other hand, you have to see. Their self-titled debut album utterly floored me; it was one of the best things I heard all of last year, melding prog and metal and gorgeous melodies and raging guitars and I don’t know what the hell else. They’re not a metal band, per se — although they definitely look it — but instead end up sounding like just smart, sharp-edged, anything-that-works rock.
Plus, there’s local metal heroes {Venomous Maximus}, who rule in general (although I’ve yet to see ’em live, sadly). And I just saw that they got written up in Metal Hammer, which is freaking awesome. Get there early; they go on at 9PM.
