Yr. Weekend, Pt. 3: Via Colori + Katz Coffee Porter Party + Indian Jewelry + Folk-Punk + More

What the…? How the hell is today a Sunday (November 20th, for the calendar-less), with everything that’s going on? Damn… Here’s what looks good to me:

Via Colori Houston Benefit for The Center for Hearing and Speech, featuring Roky Moon & BOLT!, Andrew Karnavas, Two Star Symphony, Sideshow Tramps, Spain Colored Orange, Benjamin Wesley, Ancient Cat Society, & The Literary Greats @ Sam Houston Park
Yep, mentioned this already, I know, but if anything, the lineup today looks better than the previous day’s. Not only are excellent string quartet oddballs {Two Star Symphony} playing, but so are {The Sideshow Tramps}, whose new album, Revelator is pretty badass.

Plus, there’s also the mesmerizing, heavy-lidded drone-pop of {Benjamin Wesley}, the roots-rock coolness of {The Literary Greats}, and headliners Roky Moon & BOLT!, in all their leather-clad, Bowie/T.Rex/Meat Loaf-loving glory. If you haven’t see the band yet, trust me, you really need to. I’ve even been able to convert a handful of classic rock diehards at the office…

Anyway, The Center for Hearing and Speech is a worthwhile cause to be helping out, and the whole street-art thing sounds pretty awesome; check out some pics from years past over here.

Katz Coffee Porter Party, featuring Something Fierce, Allen Oldies Band, The Tontons, The Suspects, Folk Family Revival, & Benjamin Wesley @ 900 Winbern (2-9PM)
Okay, so I don’t drink much, and when I do, it’s not generally beer. That said, this sounds like a darn cool show… It’s over at 900 Winbern, between Travis & Main near The Continental Club, and it’s free, which is always cool. They’ve got a great lineup set up for the celebration of Real Ale Brewing Company‘s Coffee Porter (made with coffee from H-town’s own Katz Coffee Roasters), including soul-psych kids {The Tontons}, old-school pop-punks {Something Fierce}, excellent Americana crew {Folk Family Revival}, the previously-mentioned Benjamin Wesley, and local ska legends {The Suspects}.

Prince Rama/Indian Jewelry/Wicked Casanova @ Mango’s
I’m not going to claim to be a fan of Prince Rama — sorry, I’m just not that into noodly, swirly psych unless there’s more structure behind it — but I am a big fan of {Indian Jewelry}, who also dwell in the realm of the hallucinogen-enhanced but who do it with an awesomely abrasive, fuck-it-all sense of deconstruction. They’re not about nodding off and chilling out, envisioning utopian castles in the clouds; they’re about demolishing those castles with C-4 and then tromping through the wreckage on the backs of massive war elephants. Take that however you want.

Last Folk Punk Show, featuring Kim Champion, Aaron Goldman, & Adam and the Ancient Gods @ Sedition Books (901 Richmond; 7PM)
Yeah, this one’s a little on the bittersweet side. As mentioned not too long ago, local bookstore/infoshop Sedition Books is moving at the end of November (although where they’re moving to is still up in the air, apparently), so this’ll be the final installment of their “Folk-Punk Show” deal at the current location. Go wish ’em good luck in the move, listen to some politically-minded, loud-ass folk, and pick up some discounted books & whatnot…

Acoustic Showcase, featuring Sammy Hundley, Paige Lewis, & The Elroys @ Warehouse Live (Green Room)
I still need to see {Paige Lewis} live, it’s true — apparently I just missed her one weekend recently at Freebird’s — but I’m already pretty impressed by the songs the young singer/songwriter’s got up online. She’s got a nice voice, sweet but not too saccharine, and the songs are pretty well-crafted…
