Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Via Colori + Square and Compass + Art Market + Nameless Sound + More

Yep, we’re onto Saturday now, November 19th, and there’s still a crapload of stuff going on; I’m going to have to keep it a little brief, though. Here goes:

Via Colori Houston Benefit for The Center for Hearing and Speech, featuring Klockwork, DJ Ceeplus Bad Knives, Jerk Store, Zydeco Dots, Cafe Khytaro & Solero Flamenco, Westbound, Ira Perez, & The Texas Toast @ Sam Houston Park
Yeah, I talked about this one some already, but it’s still damn cool (and going on ’til 6PM, I’m told). Get on up to Sam Houston Park and check out all the awesome street art and music, all at once.

Square and Compass/Kill The Rhythm @ Big Star Bar
I was really bummed to miss the HPMA performance by old-school emo dudes {Square and Compass}, especially since I’m told they’ve been hard at work recording new songs for their forthcoming full-length (which they swear will be all Braid-like and not at all the slower, jazzier stuff I wasn’t all that keen on on their debut EP).

6th Annual Winter Holiday Art Market, featuring Corey Power, Frank Freeman, Donnie Sands, & Melissa Savcic @ Winter Street Studios (11AM-8PM)
Another one I’ve mentioned already, but again, it’s still very worth checking out. The other night was the kickoff/preview party, but now you can just hit up the Winter Holiday Art Market, snag some cool art, and check out cool folk-y singer/songwriters like Corey Power and {Melissa Savcic}, all for free

Nameless Sound, featuring Pauline Oliveros, Ricardo Arias, & Chris Cafe @ Wortham Opera Theatre/Shepherd School of Music (Rice Univ. campus; 8PM)
While I can’t claim to be a big fan of Pauline Oliveros — just not my thing — this is noteworthy for being a “telematic” performance where all three participants are collaborating remotely from one another. Oliveros will be here in Houston, obviously, while cellist Chris Chafe will be in California (he’s a professor at Stanford), and “balloon kit” performer Ricardo Arias will be in Bogotá, Colombia. (And if you want a better description of the “balloon kit” than I can give, look here.)

Regardless of what you think of the music in general, this should be pretty dang interesting for anybody who’s into experimental music, seeing as it’ll be three improvisers linked up in real time using the Internet2 network, playing off one another even though they’re thousands of miles apart. I’m pretty sure I read something similar in a sci-fi novel once…
