Check Out The Tontons This Saturday at Cactus, Free (UPDATED!)
UPDATE: And like that, they’re gone. Whoosh. Thanks, y’all!
Got some good news recently about awesomely cool band {The Tontons}, namely that they just released their latest EP, Golden, which folks like me’ve been looking forward to for a few months now. And from a quick initial listen, yeah, it’s pretty jaw-droppingly cool — the band honestly just keeps getting better & better, cranking down their weird, cool, how-does-that-work? mix of soul, pop, show-tunes, and psych-rock ’til it freaking hums.
I’ll hopefully be able to do a real-live review of it soon (the past few weeks have eaten me alive, I swear, and the next two look poised to continue the trend), but hey, you can always grab it yourself over at Cactus for a measly $5. Sure, by next Tuesday (10/4) you’ll be able to download the EP from ITunes, CDBaby, and a bunch of other places, but the Cactus deal has an added benefit: if you buy a CD, you get a wristband that gets you into a super-special performance this coming Saturday, October 1st over at Cactus (at 5PM).
Yep, that’s no wristband, no entry — this one’s for the diehard Tontons fans, y’all. The show will apparently be a “full-length” performance, too, which I think means it’ll be a full set rather than an abbreviated, in-store-style set like most of what you get over at Cactus. They’re expecting the place to fill up fast, and hey, there’ll be St. Arnold’s on hand for refreshments, too.
If you can’t make it over to Cactus before Saturday, though, you could still be in luck. Excellent local photog/scenester/promo guy Mark C. Austin has kindly offered up 2 pairs of wristbands (that’s 4 wristbands, total) to us here at SCR to give away.
If you want one, either email “contests” at “spacecityrock dot com” with the “Subject:” line “Tontons me, please!”, or look for the corresponding post on our Facebook page or Twitter feed and respond there. The first two people (hey, you get to pick a friend to bring along!) to respond win. Cool? Good.
After that, keep an eye out for the band’s TBA official release show (mark your calendars for 10/21) and then the band’s upcoming West Coast(!) tour…
Can’t wait to dig into their new EP, but disappointed it’s not a full legnth. I wonder if this means 2 more years before another full legnth or if they’re really gonna have to hit the studio (and songwriting) to come up with a full legnth in 2012. Ah well, leave them wanting more!
