Next Saturday: Raise Some Fun(ds) with DiverseWorks (& Jana Hunter, & Wild Moccasins, etc.)
Gotta love those DiverseWorks folks — the place has brought forth some truly, truly amazing things, things you’re not likely to find/see/hear anywhere else in this city, and they do it while remaining down-to-earth and unpretentious (well, relatively). Seriously, they’re one of the coolest, hardest-working art spaces/centers/whatever in the whole damn country.
Of course, things like this need money-money-money to keep rollin’ on, no matter how awesome they may be. So this coming Saturday, August 27th, the DW crew are holding a FUNdraiser over at the ArtSpace to raise funds (and fun, obviously) for the forthcoming fall season. They’ll have St. Arnold’s beer on hand, and they’ll be raffling off a bunch of neat-sounding packages, including stuff from The Octopus Project, Cactus, Fitzgerald’s, The Orange Show, and the Aurora Picture Show.
Oh, and then there’s the utterly priceless “Dinner with Roy Mata” raffle package, which very nearly made me spit my coffee all over the keyboard when I read it. I guarantee there’ll be people fighting over that one…
Plus, some supremely-talented people will be on hand to provide music for the shindig, namely expat Houstonian Jana Hunter, meandering back down our way for a show prior heading back east to play the Hopscotch Music Fest in NC with Lower Dens, excellent indie-popsters {The Wild Moccasins}, cool, cool indie gang {sIngs}, quirky noise-pop guy, er, band {The Wiggins}, and the talented {DJ Brett Koshkin} (whose awesome ongoing history of soul music in H-town, Bayou City Soul, should be required reading for anybody into music; been meaning to mention it for a while now…).
The minimum donation/ticket price is $10, although you can obviously donate however much you feel like. And if you can’t make it out, btw, you can always donate online over here — it’s definitely a worthy cause. The doors open at 8PM…
