Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Folk Family Revival (Rev’d!) + Dax Riggs + Devin The Dude + Wails + Jealous Creatures + More
Day 2 of this fine weekend, today, Saturday, July 9th, and there’s definitely some good stuff going on. I’ve already mentioned a couple of things, like the benefit for Blues in Hi-Fi DJ Clint Broussard and the second day of the two-day WE MAKE PARTY shows up at Rudz in celebration of David Ensminger‘s new book on punk-rock flyer art, but there’s plenty beyond that.
Waaaaay up in The Woodlands, at the Dosey Doe Coffee House, Magnolia-dwellers {Folk Family Revival} (formerly known as “Mason Lankford & the Folk Family Revival”) are playing a cool-sounding release party for their debut full-length, Unfolding — label/management group Magnolia Red was kind enough to send it our way, and I have to say, it’s pretty awesome. Check out the title track in the Mixtape, over there on the right, and then read the full review over here.
Back down in the über-trendy Heights at Fitzgerald’s, there’s a pair of shows scheduled that are fighting for a place at the top of my list (the place has been doing that a lot lately, which is very cool). First off, Houma-bred swamp-metal dude Dax Riggs, whom I absolutely love, is playing, along with equally swampy (although not as metal) local boys {The Examples}. Riggs’ We Sing of Only Blood or Love has pretty much a permanent place in my car’s CD collection, and for good reason.
On the other floor, H-town’s own weed-hop icon, {Devin The Dude}, will be doing his thing, apparently on his lonesome — but hey, there’s nothing to complain about there, ’cause the guy’s great at what he does. Which is, um, rap about weed, women, weed, cops, and weed. I’ll admit I haven’t heard much of what the guy’s done lately, but I’m a fan, all the same.
Heading on over to the Midtown nexus that is Main & Richmond, The Mink‘s got a good show, with out-of-towner Nic Armstrong, {Young Girls}/{Springfield Riots}‘ Pedro Tijerina doing a solo thing, and (best of all, at least for me) coolly shoegaze-y, Kiwi-pop-esque band {Wails}. They don’t play all that often, and that’s a shame, because their self-titled EP is very cool.
Then there’s a good, if varied, lineup at The Continental Club, with cool, murky rockers {Jealous Creatures} playing alongside fun quasi-trad Celtic band {Murder the Stout}, who I got to bring to the Day Job a couple of years ago for a “pub party” deal; both are darn good bands.
There’s more, too, but I’m out of time for the moment — full list, right here:
