Registration for Girls Rock Camp Houston 2011 Now Open
Cool, cool news, y’all — thanks to the hard work of a lot of very dedicated people, it appears that Girls Rock Camp Houston has survived to rock out another year. Which is awesome on many levels; on the totally selfish level, my own budding rock star isn’t quite old enough yet, but one of these days I’m going to attempt to enroll her in this thing, so I desperately want ’em to stick around for that reason…
Anyway, today (April 1st) is the first day of registration for this year’s Camp, to be held August 1-5 at the Rice Student Center. It’s open to all girls between the ages of 8 and 18, and while it ain’t cheap — $350 is the total cost — it’s a very neat, once-in-a-lifetime deal. And as a parent, I can attest to the fact that while $350 sounds like a lot, it’s really just a drop in the bucket. (We spent almost that much for a karate class Midget #1 decided she didn’t really want to do after about six sessions. sigh.)
If you’re interested, head to the Website to get the registration forms. You can also apply for one of three full scholarships to the Camp, too, by writing a 300-word essay about why you want to attend; oh, and there’re only a total of 30 spots at the Camp, so space is pretty limited in general.
Of course, the thing doesn’t run without the kindness of others, so if you’re interested in helping out during the camp (as an instructor, a counselor, a “band coach,” roadie, or whatever else), look over here for how to volunteer.
The GRCH crew are also always looking for donations, whether it’s musical instruments for the campers to play, office supplies, or just plain-old cash. Help ’em out however you can, y’all.
