SXSW Overflow Starts This Week at the Super Happy
Yep, it’s that time again, the middle of March, when all kinds of bands come to town, bands that wouldn’t ever end up here otherwise. No, I’m not talking about that thing up in Austin, but about the now-annual SXSW Overflow Fest that’s going on at Super Happy Fun Land starting Wed., March 9th and running through Thurs., March 24th. It’s kind of like that big festival thingie up northwest of here, only cheaper and much less crowded.
In years past it’s been a cool little grab-bag of music, with a slew of bands nobody in this town’s likely to have ever heard of before. You never know what you’re going to get, but at $8 (these are touring bands, remember, most from far, far away) a night or $25 for the whole two-week deal, it’s well worth the gamble.
At any rate, last year I (possibly foolishly) attempted to write little rundowns of who was playing each freaking night (yes, Myspace does still have its uses), and yeah, I think I’m going to at least try to do it again, night by night. If I just can’t pull it off for some night or other, I apologize profusely in advance…
You can check out the schedule on the SHFL site (and yeah, it may well change in mid-fest, so be warned), or check out this cool, easier-to-read poster version the {Free Press Houston} folks have put together.
I’m not real familiar with most of the folks playing, but there’re some I’d really like to check out, myself:
- What Cheer? Brigade
- Lost Coves
- The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt
- Secret Mountains
- Rooftop Vigilantes
- Country Mice
- Chris Bathgate
- Brontosaurus
- This City Defects
- Ghost Scorpion
- Pujol
- Goldenboy
- Low Victor Echo
- Turbo Fruits
Check back soon for the actual rundown-type posts.
