Yr. Weekend, Pt. 3: Prairie Cadets + Corey Power + Binarium Sound Series + Upcoming Stuff + More
End of the weekend, coming right up; it’s now Sunday, February 20th, and never fear, there’s still some cool shit to do to round out the past few days.
First off, though, a little news — been trawling back through the PR emails we’ve gotten in over the weekend, and holy fuck are there some awesome new things popping up on the radar. Namely:
- 3/22/11 – Surfer Blood @ House of Blues
- 4/12/11 – Gogol Bordello @ House of Blues
- 5/4/11 – The Arcade Fire @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion (and yeah, that one probably wins the award for Most Appropriate Pseudo-Homecoming Show of the Year, too, considering the subject matter of The Suburbs)
Mark yr calendars for those, eh? But in the meantime:
The Caroline Sessions, featuring Prairie Cadets, Reckless Endeavor, Corey Power, & Uncle Dean @ Caroline Collective (2-5PM)
This one’s going to be damn good, I swear; I’ve still yet to see {Prairie Cadets} live, but the more I hear from ’em, the better they get, to the point where it’s pretty ridiculous. Check out their latest set of demos up online if you don’t believe me — in the relatively short time they’ve been around, they’ve morphed from a slaphappy duo playing quirky pop songs into a rock-solid, bona-fide folk-rock outfit, combining jangly, driving guitars with singer Marc Brubaker‘s gravelly vocals to come up with something that’s kin to fellow locals Buxton but with a bit more fire and vitriol.
It’s very cool to see April Patrick‘s now rounding out the crew, too, taking on the bass duties; her former outfit, {Guitars}, was pretty damn good itself.
Plus, the show also features Corey Power of the excellent {Ragged Hearts} and {Chase Hamblin}‘s band; never seen/heard him solo, but I love the Hearts’ one (c’mon, y’all) full-length so far. And hey, it’s free — free, you hear me? Free afternoon shows rule.
Binarium Sound Series, featuring A Week of Kindness, Chin Xaou Ti Won, & Vaginal Reconstructive Surgery @ The Mekong Underground (8-10PM)
Can’t claim to know a whole lot about the folks playing tonight’s Binarium Sound Series show, but the deal’s a pretty good bet no matter who’s on the bill — for you experimental-/improvised-music types BSS should be a weekly date on your calendar, seriously.
Besides the general coolness, however, I’ve heard good things in the past about the seemingly mysterious duo who call themselves {Chin Xaou Ti Won}; hadn’t seen much from ’em in a while, so I was actually afraid they’d broken up before I could check ’em out. Happily, that’s not the case…
