Girls Rock Camp Christmas Benefit, Coming Up
Lots of good/big shows coming up, and I wanted to get a little bit of a jump on ’em, at least, and mention one that’s pretty near & dear to my heart.
If you’ve read this blog much, you probably know how big a fan yours truly is of the Girls Rock Camp Houston deal — I’ve got a music-obsessed six-year-old daughter, so I think the Girls Rock Camp idea is a really, really beautiful thing. Getting girls to feel confident about making music on their own is awesome, and that’s what GRCH does, with camp attendees writing songs, practicing in bands, performing live, the whole ball of wax.
And happily, it seemed like GRCH’s inaugural season went pretty well — it sounds like the lucky first crew to go through the one-week camp had a blast, and the GRCH staff were able to get enough financial support to be able to keep things going for the 2011 year. Which is a badass thing, I have to say.
Of course, guitar strings don’t grow on trees (ah, if only…), so Saturday after next, December 18th, the GRCHers will be throwing a Christmas Benefit Show up at Rudyard’s, with three kind supporters of girls playing music lending their instruments: heavy, quirky stoner-rock dudes the {Linus Pauling Quartet}, old-school noise-punks {Anarchitex}, & world-crushing metallers {Omotai}. That’s a damn fine lineup, right there…
At any rate, there’s no cover — that’s right, it’s a free benefit — but GRCH and the participating bands are asking for donations to help buy instruments & other gear, get general school-supply-type stuff, and fund scholarships for kids whose families can’t afford the full $275 tuition (that was last year’s, anyway).
Your monetary contribution will help fund musical equipment needs (such as instruments, amps, PAs, guitar strings, ear plugs, etc.), materials and supplies for non-musical workshops, and scholarships for families who cannot afford to pay the full tuition to attend the camp.
Thanks for all the support Jeremy! Just reading this made me tear up!

Thanks for the additional push for this show Jeremy. We’re definitely feeling like this is a good cause, and one that we should all get behind. The GRCH is a really great organization, and I’m just blown away that something like that happened of its own accord here in Houston. That says a lot about how amazing this city really is.
No problem, y’all — the Girls Rock Camp’s a pretty awesome thing, & deserves all the help it can get…
