Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Screeching Weasel + 30footFALL + Kashmere Stage Band + The Watermarks + The Energy + More
A bit late for tonight, but it’s been a crazy-busy day. There’s quite a bit going on this Friday (August 20th, that is), although I’m kind of at a loss to talk about most of it, unfortunately. Here goes:
Screeching Weasel/30footFALL/The Energy @ Warehouse Live
Hell, yes. I’ll grant that I’ve never been the biggest Screeching Weasel fan, no, but these days they feel like a refreshing blast from the past compared to what passes for “pop-punk.” Damn; it’s hard to believe they’ve been around (off & on) since ’86, at this point.
Better still, though, quasi-local pop-punk legends {30footFALL} are opening, and going by the way they tore up the stage at the Summerfest back in July, they haven’t missed a step. Plus, there’s {The Energy}, who I was also pleased to catch at Summerfest; the band’s got a very cool old-school punk roar to it, well worth checking out.
The Kashmere Reunion Stage Band @ Miller Outdoor Theater
Just found out about this one today, and it’s bound to be a damn good one… I’ve heard amazing things about the original Kashmere Stage Band, who roared off the stage of Kashmere HS here in Houston back in the late ’60s and ’70s with a wild, heavy, funky sound that’s apparently something like the Bar-Kays at their best. If you can make it out for this reunion, do it.
Young Girls/The Watermarks/The Live Lights/Mobley/Skandalon @ Mango’s (free!)
Dunno some of the folks playing this one, sadly (like Mobley and Skandalon), but the ones I have heard, particularly {The Watermarks} and {The Live Lights}, both of whom do some nicely bombastic, electro-tinged rock that’s more arena-sized than fit for a stage as teeny-tiny as Mango’s. Then there’s {Young Girls}, the new project of Pedro Tijerina from {Springfield Riots} — haven’t heard ’em, but I’ve heard good things, seriously. And hey, this show is free, which is always a bonus.
Runners-Up:
Leo Party, featuring Poopy Lungstuffing, Organ Failure, Cinema Bomar, Buffalo Moon, & Chelsea Boys @ Super Happy Fun Land
Los Skarnales/Reckless Ones/The Unzipped/La Guerilla @ Fitzgerald’s
Andrew Graham & Swarming Branch/Wols @ The Mink
The Burden/The Lion of Wall Street/All At Sea/The Love Below/Judas @ Nay’s Place (15622 Magee Rd.)
A Fistful of Soul @ The Mink (midnight)
Poor Dumb Bastards/Luxurata @ Rudyard’s
Chicken With Common Spy/The Nay Says/Luke Lukas/Foster/Manic Mongrel/Aimless Gun @ Fitzdown
There you go; still plenty of time to get on out of the house, so get a move on…
I just discovered this. Thanks a lot for talking here about The Watermarks’ show from last Friday. We really appreciate it. In case you were not able to go, the show went really well. Also, you should check Mobley out, especially live, they are from Austin, and this is like the 4th or 5th show we’ve played with them. They are amazing performers. Young Girls is an excellent band as well, and since they are from here I’m sure checking them out won’t be too hard.
Anyways, thanks again for all the good things you have said about The Watermarks.
