Tonight: Electric Attitude Hit the Road (And Yeah, Other People Do, Too)

I’m sure I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: as somebody who’s been a passionate observer of the music scene here in H-town for something like 15 years now, it does my soul good to see that these days nearly every damn band in town is attempting to hit the road and play to non-hometown crowds.

Seriously, it seems like not a weekend goes by that some band doesn’t have a “tour kickoff” show — I know {The Wild Moccasins}, {B L A C K I E}, {News on the March}, {Golden Cities}, {Co-Pilot}, {LIMB}, Roky Moon & BOLT, {Something Fierce}, & {Young Mammals} have all played out-of-town and out-of-state in recent months (sometimes on multiple swings), and in the near future, {Omotai}, {football, etc.}, {Muhammad Ali}, and tonight’s kickoff-ee, {Electric Attitude}, are heading out in the very near future.

All of which is very cool, to me. The scene here is great as-is, and I love it, but I also firmly believe that exposure outside of the Beltway would be an awesome thing for a lot of the really, truly excellent bands here. Much as my general instinct is to sneer at the world beyond Houston and tell ’em to go screw themselves (that means you, snarky-hipster NY Times commenters), I honestly think it’d be a good thing to let the world see what we’ve got going on.

And yes, as mentioned briefly above, tonight (Thurs., July 8th) marks the start of Electric Attitude‘s tour, which’ll take ’em up through the Midwest and, um, I have no idea where beyond that. (I’m assuming, mind you, that they have some kind of plan for getting back home from Memphis…)

I’m betting, btw, that they could really use some funding for their cross-country jaunt, gas prices being what they are, so get on up to Walter’s, pay your $6, and enjoy. They’ll be headlining, I believe, playing that funky-smooth dance-rock thing they do that’s like this bizarro cross between the Rolling Stones and Sly and the Family Stone (and, for you modernists, a little bit like The Faint or a funkier Killers at points), and they’re joined by fellow cool-ass bands {The Live Lights} and {Come See My Dead Person}, the latter of which I must admit to being somewhat mesmerized by at the moment. Whoa.

It’s gonna be a good show, honest. Support your friendly neighborhood touring band…

Late comment, I know. But my favorite part of bands getting out on tour, aside from getting Houston in everyone’s faces, is that the bands often come back tighter and more focused after playing the same songs day in & day out. Wild Moccasins specifically has benefited greatly from touring.

Oh, definitely — when they came back from their first tour, they were MILES better than they had been the previous time I saw ’em. It was pretty impressive.
