Tonight: The Wild Moccasins Tour Kickoff (Reviewed!) + Muhammad Ali + Spain Colored Orange + The Watermarks + More
Caveat, caveat, caveat, before I mention anything else: since every freaking road in this city currently appears to be flooding, I make no guarantees that anything scheduled for this evening will be happening. Seriously, if you can get home from work right now, you’re doing pretty well. I wouldn’t be surprised if a bunch of this evening’s shows get cancelled…
Which is a damn shame, because tonight (Fri., July 2nd, that is) is the awesome-sounding tour kickoff show for local sweet-voiced, friendly-as-hell popsters {The Wild Moccasins}, who’re playing up at Walter’s starting at around 8PM before heading off to parts unknown (don’t worry; they’re coming back, I swear). I’ve been listening to their debut full-length, Skin Collision Past, for quite a while now and have finally gotten ’round to reviewing the damn thing right over here — trust me when I say that it’s phenomenal, miles and miles beyond Microscopic Metronomes. It’s making me see the band in a whole new (and good) light, honestly.
Their live shows, of course, are always pretty amazing in themselves — check out writer Robin B.‘s nice writeup of the band’s CD release a while back for evidence of that. And as an added bonus, tonight’s show also includes weirdo-popster/s {The Wiggins} and Houston-bred/Austin-dwelling indie-pop heroes The Eastern Sea, the latter of whom I freaking adore, just about as much as I do the Moccasins themselves. Assuming the roof of Walter’s doesn’t cave in, it’s going to be a badass show.
Of course, that’s hardly the only thing (maybe) going on. {Muhammad Ali} are supposedly blowing the doors off Notsuoh this evening — downtown in the pouring rain! whee! — while {Spain Colored Orange} and the tantalizingly named {Journey Agents} are hitting Rudz. There’s also cool alt-rockers {Fired for Walking}, over at the Big Star Bar, and Mango’s has {The Watermarks} and {Featherface}, among others, and…ah, hell, here’s the whole pile:
