Not Gone Yet: Guitars’ Last Hurrah in H-Town

Okay, so you remember how I grumbled & moaned, oh, a little more than a week ago about how local retro-garage-psych-y rockers Guitars (or GTRS, or GUITARS, or guitars, take yr pick) were headed off to North Carolina — to start up a recording studio, I hear — and were playing one last H-town show before they bailed on us for the forseeable future?

Um. So, it turns out that was a little premature. Apparently the band had already agreed to play a show tonight, Monday, November 2nd, up at Mango’s, when they agreed to do their “last Houston show” at Big Star Bar weekend before last, so the wires got crossed a bit. Their confusion is your gain, however, ’cause now you’ve got a chance to make up for missing out on their previous “last” show by checking ’em out tonight when they play with Thomas Function & Yussuf Jerusalem. It’s like a pre-comeback/hometown reunion show, right?

Anyway, I’ll say once again that it’s a damn shame the Guitars folks are leaving us, not in the least because White Night White Night is an awesome (yet surprisingly understated) ’60s-/’70s-tinged bit of rambling rawk that hits the Velvet Underground and Phil Spector in equal measure and comes away clean. (See my full pontificating on it right here, if you’re so inclined.)

Plus, I hear Thomas Function and Yussuf Jerusalem are darn good — the former’s on Fat Possum, which is never a bad thing, and the latter is French and seemingly kinda strange. All for $5, which is considerably less than many of us just spent on crappy, crappy candy for the neighborhood kids, so y’know, it’s hard to beat. Go see the Guitars crew off, for real this time…

Hey, thanks for clearing up that pavement nonsense. GTRS are of the consensus that pavement are one of the lamest and overrated bands ever, and we would never, under any circumstances, allow anything we do to sound remotely like them. And thank you also for noting that VU are our spiritual moms and dads.
