Update: Sleepy Sun, Reviewed + Tonight at The Orange Show

Yep, got one new review up today, in time for a show tonight (Wed., September 2nd, that is) — SF psych-rock outfit Sleepy Sun are playing this evening over at The Orange Show (as part of their cool-sounding 2009 Fall Concert Series), and after hearing the band’s most recent full-length, Embrace, well, wow. It’s going to be mind-blowing, especially in as quirky a place as the Orange Show; I can’t really imagine how freaking loud it’s going to be. (Memo to Orange Show-sters: expect noise complaints after this one, y’all.)

The Sleepy Sun folks combine ultra-thick, fuzzy-edged bass with sultry/strange vocals and thundering, stomping, Queens of the Stone Age-sized guitars to come up with some of the most badass, heavy, jaw-dropping psych-rock I’ve heard in quite a while — they’re like a cross between Federation X and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club with Allison Mosshart on vocals, if you can picture it (eat it, Dead Weather). And what’s more, they’re damn good. The music drifts when it needs to, crushes you to the floor when it needs to, howls and whispers softly when it needs to.

Check out the full review, courtesy of yours truly, right over here, then check ’em out tonight.

They’ll be playing with Austin’s My Education, which is an extra bonus, as those instro-rockers (instro-post-rockers?) continue to inch upwards in my estimation with every damn release they put out. They also have the distinction of being the band SCR‘s reviewed the absolute most, I think, over the years — Henry Mayer wrote up their latest back in July right here. Heck, the show would probably be worth it just for My Education, so maybe Sleepy Sun are the bonus…eh, whichever works.

Details: tickets tonight will be $10, doors open at 7PM, & the show starts at 8PM.
