Leave Your Genre at the Door, Friday Night

I sorely neglected to mention the last installment of hip-hop/soul diva/entrepreneur Kam Franklin‘s cool-ass Leave Your Genre at the Door showcases, and I really, truly don’t want to make that same mistake again.

This coming Friday, July 31st at Fitzgerald’s, she & her crew are celebrating the show’s one-year anniversary, and I seriously hope it’s the first of a ton of ’em. Kam’s lined up a full cross-section of the best music-makers in town, and true to the show’s title, they span all sorts of genres.

On the reggae/ska front, there’s a freaking-cool, long-due reunion of heroes Sound Patrol, rocksteady (I think?) guys The Pocket, & reggae band Brains For Dinner. Then there’s the rock contingent, represented by sharp-edged rock dudes Satin Hooks, jam-y prog-rockers Tax The Wolf, glam-ish Electric Attitude, countryish folk-rockers Buxton, & instro-rock duo Female Demand.

Smart, soft-hearted nerdy guys The Mathletes, out-of-time folk players listenlisten, newish Austin transplant Love Field, and By the End of Tonight side project-gone-large sIngs all steer clear of the more “rock” stuff, instead aiming more for the quieter, more thoughtful end of things.

Last but not least, of course, there’s the hip-hop side of things, with backpack-hop dude Fat Tony facing off with bone-crushing noise rapper B L A C K I E, rap-rockers Studemont Project, twisty/quirky rapper Babel fissh, sex-crazed rappers balls d33p, and totally fierce female MC Perseph One. There’s also Shina Rae, Check Other, & Ellypseas, but I’m totally unfamiliar with all three of those, I’m afraid.

The doors at Fitz open at 7PM, with the first band playing at 8PM — tickets are $10 apiece for both floors of Fitz. Pretty damn cheap, if you ask me, for what you get. I’ve got my fingers crossed Leave Your Genre keeps it up a good long time…
