Texas Heat, Melted Down
Ouch. I’ll admit it — I didn’t make it out this past weekend to the Texas Heat Music Festival. I know, I know; I suck. What can I say? Just the thought of standing on hot white concrete all afternoon beneath the blistering sun on one of the hottest days of the scorching-est summer in memory, with temps well above the hundreds and not a cloud in sight, made me feel more than a little ill. So yeah, I wussed out.
According to Joe Mathlete‘s pithy one-sentence review of the festival for 29-95.com, I wasn’t the only one. To quote Joe:
It was a million degrees, too expensive, nobody came and I stole fifteen energy drinks out of spite.
Damn. As if I didn’t feel guilty already… The saddest part is that there were quite a few really, really good folks playing — The Rapture, RJD2, Grandfather Child, Searching for Signal, The Mathletes, Roky Moon & Bolt, Satin Hooks, & The Gold Sounds, to name off a handful. It sounds like it wasn’t enough, though, to keep the confluence of brain-melting heat and, well, a holiday weekend where most folks plan to be somewhere cooler (or at least stay inside) and/or hang with family & friends from killing the deal.
Anybody go? Any estimates on how many people did show up? I have yet to see any pictures from the thing, and the Texas Heat site hasn’t changed since the day before the festival started, as far as I can tell…
Here’s hoping the next two hot-ass-outside music-type thingies coming up — the Houston Press Music Awards Showcase downtown & the Free Press Summerfest — fare better. And then maybe next year we can all embrace the idea of the spring music festival, as opposed to the summer. ‘Cause if Texas Heat had been held back in, say, April, it would’ve been downright beautiful.
Yep.. an October or April festival would be pretty fantastic.
Maybe a SpaceCityRock festival? I'm sure it takes very little effort to put something like that on..ha!

Here's some links to pictures from the event. Pretty dismal. I hear there were only about 45-50 paid the entire weekend.

Hey, Bryan — yeah, that'd be fun, but I think my wife would kick me out if I tried to juggle something like that w/all the rest of it. ;^)
That said, I am hoping to do sort of a 10-yr(!) anniversary show thing at some point soon, most likely once the weather cools down a bit. Been meaning to set it up for a while now, but seeing as the year's already half over…
Anonymous — holy shit, that's bleak as hell. Wow. I mean, the Drop the Lime pic makes it look like the guy's doing a soundcheck, not playing a freaking festival. Damn. I'm guessing somebody's out a ton of money w/this… :^(
