"Labyrinth" + Live Music (This Sunday)

Yeah, I’m a fantasy nerd; I’m not going to deny it. I spent my formative years devouring every sci-fi and fantasy book, TV show, movie, and comic book imaginable, pretty much starting with a family trip across Europe when we lived in Germany — I read The Hobbit traveling past ancient castles and snow-capped mountains, and I was hooked.

Which explains, at least partly, why the news of a big-screen showing of bizarro fantasy cult classic Labyrinth, complete with live music, makes me wish I wasn’t going to be waiting to get on an airplane right when it’s happening. Argh.

So, the showing of this first foray of Jim Henson’s into muppet-fantasy (friendlier & less “deep” than The Dark Crystal) at 3:30PM or 7:30PM this coming Sunday, February 15th, at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, would be cool to me no matter what, but the addition of “live” music by self-proclaimed laptop-pop Shuttle Debris makes it even more intriguing. The duo supposedly takes the soundtrack to the original and makes it their own, although I’m not entirely sure how that’s done…

C’mon, you know you love (er, loved) it, too; freaky goblin puppets, Bowie singing intensely odd rhyming songs, an aesthetic ripped off repeatedly by Tim Burton…what could be better? (And hey, Jennifer Connelly is awesome no matter what.)
