Workshop Houston Benefit, with Japanther & Some Damn Good Locals (Woo, Mathletes!)
Met Joel from promising-looking local resource site Indiehouston.org this past weekend at BandCamp (more on that soon, I swear), and he threw this one out there, asking very nicely if we might be able to slap up flyers for this Japanther show they’d set up for this coming Sunday, October 26th (at the ever-versatile Caroline Collective).
I said, “yeah, sure!,” not really knowing what to expect, but lo and behold: this looks like a pretty badass show. I mean, I like Japanther as much as the next guy, but they’re not my favorite band or anything, y’know? On top of the noise-rock heroics, though, the show also includes tourmates Killer Dreamer, rawk-heavy locals The American Sharks (who I have been needing to check out live, but I’m not actually sure they’re really still together beyond one-offs like this), eclectic DJ duo Grrrl Parts, & H-town rap star-to-be Fat Tony, all of whom are damn good.
Saving the best for last, though, the show also includes one of my favorite, favorite, favorite bands, the slap-happy, sweetly earnest/strange Mathletes. Seriously, I love these guys and have been forcing their last “real” album, #$@% You and Your Cool, on everybody I know. Joe Mathlete is a freakin’ genius, I tell you.
Adding more fuel to the fire, the whole thing’s a benefit for awesome local non-profit(?) Workshop Houston, who’re a fine cause to support — I really like the fact that the WH group aims for hands-on projects for kids, to get them intimately involved in things like music, art, fashion, or actually making stuff out of metal. I haven’t seen many groups like this out there, so I’d seriously urge everybody who reads to check ’em out & support if you can. Heck, you could even support ’em by going to this show, right?
